Q: Aren't early wax cylinder recordings public domain material?
A: The sound transfers and subsequent post-processing work I perform on early sound recordings are new copyrightable works. In addition to the transfers themselves, my art involves modifications to the initial transfers (including but not limited to speed corrections, artifact sound edits, amplitude normalization and fades). Thus, while it may be true that a given wax cylinder and its recording are in the public domain, my works presented here and at the Cylinder Music Shop are not.
Q: I would like to incorporate or cite some of Tinfoil.com's materials in my not-for-profit effort (paper, speech, etc.). Do I need permission?
