A lively piccolo, bassoon, and orchestral performance of The Nightingale and the Frog from 1902.

The Nightingale and the Frog

Company Edison's National Phonograph Company
Cylinder # 8073 (5-inch "Concert" cylinder)
Category Piccolo solo
Title The Nightingale and the Frog
Performed by Edison Symphony Orchestra
Circa July 1902
Announcement "Piccolo solo, the Nightingale and the Frog, played by the Edison Symphony Orchestra."

Enjoy this sprightly recording of this very popular instrumental, which was featured for years in many early phonograph company catalogs.   Although the piccolo and bassoon players are not credited in the announcement, the piccoloist is likely George Schweinfest as he recorded many piccolo solos for Edison during this period.

The amusing sounds captured at the end of the performance seem like that of a music stand being hit and sheet music flailing about – Any other guesses?
